Statutory Records Search

St Giles Catherdaral - EdinburghIn 1855 the registration of births, marriages and deaths became a legal requirement in Scotland replacing the parish registers held by the Church of Scotland.

The advantages were that the new system was non-denominational, free of charge and each entry followed a standard format.

Starting from a birth, marriage or death occurring in Scotland we will search every line back to the earliest statutory record we can find. This will normally take you back to around 1855 with hints on events pre-1855 (for instance, an 1855 birth certificate should give the place and the date of the parents’ marriage).

Please note that, unlike many genealogy services, we will pursue all branches related to the individual being traced as standard. We do not limit the search to just the paternal or maternal line.

A birth, marriage or death in Scotland between 1855 and the present day is the minimum but please send as much information as you have.

A typed report giving accurate transcripts of all birth, marriage and death entries viewed during the search normally sent electronically via PDF document.

The fully inclusive cost is £150 - An initial deposit of £75 is taken at the time of order with the balance due on completion
